I loved flipping through family photo albums, struck by the stories displayed in each frame, lovingly captured, printed, and captioned in my mom’s cursive handwriting. As I got older, this wonder manifested into recruiting my friends for elaborate photo shoots in our backyards around our small southern town, outfitted by our parents’ attics and armed with my starter Canon. These photos were my outlet for everything from joy to heartbreak as I watched myself grow up through my lens. My camera took me through journalism school at UNC Chapel Hill, where I fell in love with using my passion to illuminate and illustrate others’ experiences and stories. This love affair transported me to Maine, where I worked alongside some of my personal artistic heroes at a photography workshop series; to the sunny hills of Los Angeles where I managed the studio of a National Geographic photographer; and now, back to my home state of North Carolina, where I’m nurturing my penchant for photographing people and their all-types-of-love stories. As a result, Bors often feels as though their identity is erased, saying, "I think I feel most affected internally as opposed to concrete economic or what we would think of as major social barriers that are holding me back. I mean, I definitely feel like I have a lot of privilege that I can leverage as a white person and as a person who passes very easily as just a cisgender person--a cisgender woman. I also don’t mean to create kind of a divide between the political and the personal, because I think a lot of what I experience is within social settings and within relationships, romantic relationships in particular. While Bors is comfortable and confident singing ang playing such music, they also face different power struggles within the class and genre itself, saying, "It was a genre created to be a space for those seen as 'other', and I relate to that, but those roots have been ignored and it’s important to realize and connect to that as the original purpose of the genre. "Gendered people and people of other marginalized identities are at higher risk for developing mental illness, and I think that’s definitely the case with me, so it’s hard for me to separate those things. Day to day, and especially in the university setting--I mean, I’m lucky; I have access to mental healthcare and I’m registered with ARS, but still, it’s pretty impossible to be a student on this campus with a disability. "It’s easy to hypothetically say there are people like me out there who are thriving, but to read actual narratives from people who have my same experiences that are just as complex, just as extraordinary and just as beautiful as narratives we would read constantly or are socialized to think are the only narratives out there [means a lot to me]. Mendoza, who has lived in America for most of his life, is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico City, Mexico. After receiving notice, Mendoza was supposed to be deported February 14, but his case has been pushed back to August. Mendoza and Vargas hope to appeal on marital grounds for Mendoza to stay and begin permanent residency on the path to citizenship. Vargas and Mendoza were married February 19, 2017. "He was there for me, taking days off work to go to rallies with me, handing out fliers with my information to people, supporting me through all the stress and mood swings I had because of all that happened. Still when I was in one of my lowest points, instead of running away, he stayed by my side to care for me. "Sometimes it is hard to maintain a positive attitude when there is so much going against you. One thing I have seen over all these years is that this broken immigration system has taught me to fight. Vargas, his now husband whom he met at Riverside High School when he was 14, vouched for his character and signed for him, allowing him back in North Carolina. Although Mendoza has done nothing wrong and prepared all documents, there was a small chance that, during the check-in, he could be detained. Vargas accompanied him for emotional support, but had to wait outside in anticipation as he was not allowed inside the building with Mendoza during the check-in. Vargas was nervous during his husband's check-in, saying that last time "only took five minutes. I don't know why it's taking this long, but I'm just waiting for him to text me. Vargas and Mendoza are trying to get the documents ready to appeal deportation before his next check-in. "This has affected me on many levels. At this point in my life, I want to be able to have a stable life, have a career, have a house, live happy moments with my husband and family. It's a constant reminder that all of that can be taken away from you because of one person's decision. Life has brought me to a hard reality, but Kiko is always there to remind me to loosen up a little, enjoy the moment. He has showed me how to smile in dark times, and helped me during all of this. Even after 11-plus years, he still surprises me. I want to help my family, be able to provide for my parents who have fought and worked so long to give my siblings and I a better life. I can see as time passes they are aging more; I want to be stable to care for them as they did for me.
